MARIST COLLEGE
DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES
Granting credits for CLEP tests in French, German, and Spanish
CLEP tests should be for adults and in line with
credits-for-life experiences. We do not
give credits for high school language study unless it is an Advancement
Placement course or an intermediate or above level college course.
Generally, a student is limited to receiving six credits
either at the elementary or intermediate level. To receive a total of twelve credits, a student must demonstrate
and intermediate level ability in the language according to the ACTFL
Guidelines by taking an oral test arranged through the chairperson of the
Department of Modern Languages.
Generally, native speakers of the language or persons who have lived
abroad may have achieved this level of language ability.
An adult student who takes the CLEP test, receives an
appropriate score, and wishes to request twelve credits should arrange for an
interview with the chairperson of the Department of Modern Languages.
We continue to use the same scaled scores that appear in the
CLEP brochures.
