Program Description

The concern over global issues and the interdependence between nations makes the knowing of a foreign language a necessary skill in today’s society. There is increasing national and international evidence of the wide variety of opportunities for those who have competence in Spanish and a sound training in a specialized field. Spanish is spoken in 20 countries by over two hundred million people. The Bureau of the Census officially recognizes a steady increase of Spanish-speaking people in the United States and has projected that in the next few years of the coming century they will be the largest minority group. Job opportunities in Spanish, whether national or international, are numerous: teaching; federal and state government agencies; travel and tourism; advertising; public relations and the media; banking; many businesses; social and medical services; law, diplomacy and political careers among others. Many private companies in a variety of fields are in need of people competent in Spanish.

Marist College offers a solid curriculum in Spanish for those who wish to learn it as a Second Language or are Native Speakers. Our faculty is well-prepared and excellent teachers. Our advanced classes are small and offer the opportunity of a one-to-one experience. We also provide study abroad programs in Spain, Mexico and Ecuador through our Office of International Education. Internships in Spanish, an asset to prospective employers, are available to students who qualify.

With careful planning, students can include the study of Spanish (major, double major or minor) and become much more competitive in their chosen professions.
