About Sigma Delta Pi
Sigma Delta Pi is the largest foreign-language national honor society in existence, and the only society dedicated exclusively to students who are making the study of Spanish one of their major interests. Sigma Delta Pi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. It currently consists of more than 500 college/university chapters. Phi Pi is the name of Marist College’s chapter.
The purposes of this society are:
1. To honor those who attain excellence in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking peoples;
2. To honor those who have made the Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English-speaking world;
3. To encourage college and university students to acquire a greater interest in and a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture;
4. To foster friendly relations and mutual respect between the nations of Hispanic speech and those of English speech;
5. To serve its membership in ways that will contribute to the attainment of the goals and ideals of the society;
In order to be nominated for membership to Phi Pi all Marist students must have met the following basic requirements:
- Student must have declared a major (or double major) in Spanish.
- Student must have completed at least 18 credits of college Spanish (any level).
- Student must have completed at least 3 credits of Hispanic literature or
Hispanic culture and civilization. (Those students enrolled in these
courses are eligible for membership if the instructor will certify that
their work is a B quality or better).
- Student must have grades in all Spanish courses that average at least 3.3.
- Student must rank in the upper 35% of their class (3.4 GPA or higher).
- Student must have completed at least three semesters of college work.
- Student must show genuine interest in things Hispanic and be of good moral
character.
